Montreal is investing $1.2 billion in a new plant to reduce pollution from its sewage sludge processing. The current Jean-R.-Marcotte plant, one of the world's largest, uses aging incinerators that generate 40,000 tons of CO2 annually, a quarter of Montreal's municipal emissions. The new plant aims to replace these incinerators and modernize the process of turning sewage sludge into ash.
